Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer which affects the peritoneum, a special lining which covers and protects the organs in the abdominal cavity. The only known cause of peritoneal mesothelioma is previous exposure to asbestos, the microscopic particles of which can settle in the soft tissues of the abdomen and lead to the cancer.
